Symposium to focus on adoption

The adoption process can be an exciting yet difficult experience for adoptive parents, birth parents and adoptees. Women's Health @ Stanford has teamed up with the Bay Area chapter of RESOLVE to tackle such issues with a family-building symposium, "Pathways to Adoption," on April 22 at the School of Medicine.

RESOLVE is an organization dedicated to providing education, advocacy and support to those suffering from infertility or other reproductive disorders. The event marks the beginning of a larger effort to bring educational programs to women seeking to build families.

The daylong event begins at 8 a.m. in Fairchild Auditorium. Jim Batterson, executive director of Women's Health @ Stanford, will deliver opening remarks.

Topics to be explored at the day's workshops, lectures and panel discussions include:

  • Ten things adoptive parents should know
  • Risk factors and readiness in adoption
  • Agency vs. attorney adoptions: What is best for you?
  • Ethics in Adoption—Avoiding Scam Artists
  • Talking with children about adoption
  • Domestic vs. international adoption
  • Pre-registration fees are $100 per person for RESOLVE members and $125 per person for non-members. An additional $25 per person will be charged for those registering at the door. Pre-registration fees must be received in Women's Health @ Stanford offices no later than April 14.
