The 2006 Founders’ Celebration was held Monday in Memorial Church. The noontime event honored the legacy and courageous spirit of Jane and Leland Stanford through songs and speeches. Clayton Brown, a Graduate School of Business student, and Dana Craig, a Law School student, won an essay contest tied to the annual event. They read their entries to an audience that included many current and former university trustees, faculty, students, staff and elected officials from neighboring communities. President John Hennessy and the Rev. Scotty McLennan, dean for religious life, also spoke, and Talisman a Cappella sang several hymns. The annual celebration dates back to May 1892, when a ceremony was held that simultaneously commemorated Leland Stanford Jr.’s birthday (May 14, 1868) and the laying of the university’s cornerstone.
