CCSRE nets $500,000 expansion grant
The Research Institute of Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity has been awarded a $500,000 grant by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to support and expand its programs.
The institute is part of the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE), which promotes teaching and research on the role race and ethnicity plays in shaping society.
The grant, to be disbursed over three years, will help to further the institute's goal of developing a community of scholars through monthly seminars, forums, research networks and conferences, said institute director Hazel Markus, a professor of psychology. More than 100 faculty affiliated with CCSRE lead and support students and programs.
According to Markus, these programs enable the institute to support research that falls outside traditional academic boundaries. Support is provided through fellowship programs for graduate students working on dissertations, junior faculty seeking to take time off from teaching to focus on their research, emeriti maintaining an interest in scholarship on race and ethnicity, and visiting professors who contribute to the intellectual and social exchange at CCSRE.
