Summer construction 2004
June 2004 marks the seventh year that Facilities Operations staff have informed the Stanford community about campus summer construction projects. This article describes projects, locations and schedules. Project managers encourage faculty and staff to pass on the following information to visitors, vendors, delivery truck drivers, caterers, etc., prior to their departure to come to Stanford.
All project staff involved with these construction projects are committed to working together to minimize inconvenience, frustration and delay. Facilities Operations staff appreciate the understanding and accommodation of the community at large in allowing these projects to be completed for Stanford's benefit.

UTILITIES DIVISION
Campus Drive West Sanitary Sewer (0271)
Project will increase west campus sanitary sewer capacity. Project runs from Panama Street to Searsville Road; the section between Stock Farm Road and Searsville Road will require that traffic be temporarily diverted.
Duration: June 16 to Aug. 27, 2004
Olmsted to Hoskins Sanitary Sewer Extension (0272)
Project will provide a more direct connection to campus sewer outfall, in anticipation of construction of additional graduate housing.

Main Quad Condensate Replacement Project (03100)
The condensate main through the Main Quad will be replaced. Access will be through the top of the underground brick tunnel; old piping will be removed and new pipe will be installed.

New Water Well 4 (03509)
Well 4 is the second of a new generation of wells installed to guarantee availability of adequate groundwater for emergency use. The new well has been drilled and the casing installed. A head works consisting of a pump, electrical equipment and an emergency generator, mounted on a concrete slab in a fenced enclosure, remains to be completed.

Campus Drive East Lake Water Main Extension (03600)
Project continues the extension of the lake water system for irrigation. Project will start near Mayfield Avenue and terminate at Alvarado Row. Also included in the project is a connection through the Haas parking lot driveway between Campus Drive and Nathan Abbott Way.

Serra Street Flood Protection Project (0381)
Project makes storm water flow improvements by adjusting the grades of road sections and pathways in the Serra Street corridor between Campus Drive and Pampas Lane. Traffic diversions will be necessary on Serra Street and Campus Drive (between Serra Street and Bonair Siding and Campus Drive and Pampas Lane).

Lagunita Flood Control Outlet (0382)
Lake Lagunita acts as a detention basin for storm water flowing from the foothills in times of heavy rain. This project, part of an overall storm management improvement plans, installs a new outlet to quickly lower the water level following a storm and to handle runoff in the event of multiple storms.
Duration: Aug. 18 to Sept. 17, 2004
Roth Way Chilled Water Extension Project (04201)
Project improves the operating capacity and reliability of the chilled water system in the north campus area. New supply and return pipes will be installed running from near the Keck Building to a point east of the Littlefield Center. Project will be constructed in sections and will affect one block of Roth Way at a time.

F6 High-Voltage Cable Replacement (04403)
Project replaces old high-voltage cables between a point on Panama Street, west of Duena Street, to a point on Galvez Street beside the CERAS building. Work will be done mainly on weekends.

Haas-Mariposa High-Voltage Improvements (04405)
Project will take place in the parking lot near the Haas Center, between Campus Drive and Nathan Abbott Way, and increase the capacity of the high-voltage system in the area. Project will affect no more than six parking spaces at a time. (This project will be coordinated with Project 03600 to minimize disruption.)

DAPER to Escondido Village Spine Lake Water Main Extension (04602)
This two-phase project will extend lake water service into Escondido Village. Phase I, from Nelson Road at the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER) corporation yard gate to Serra Street, has yet to be scheduled. Phase II, from Olmsted Road east to Hoskins Court and then south up the Escondido Village spine to near Blackwelder Court, is scheduled as follows:

West Campus Flood Protection Improvements (04800)
This project will install drainage barriers at:
- Santa Teresa Street at Campus Drive
- Searsville Road at Campus Drive
- Campus Drive at Panama Street
- Panama Street at the curb cuts to Jordan Quad
- Governor's Avenue at Searsville Road

Bowdoin-Rains-Escondido Road Storm Drain Extension (04801)
Project will make a connection between Bowdoin Street and the drainage ditch running along Stanford Avenue.

Via Ortega Storm Drain Barrier (04802)
Project will contain storm water in the street to prevent flow into the Science and Engineering Quad.
Duration: July 14 to Aug. 27, 2004
Campus Drive East Storm Drain Barrier  Escondido Road to Arguello Way (04803)
Project will contain storm water in Campus Drive and prevent flow west toward Stern and Wilbur Halls.

Escondido Village Spine Project  Phase II
Project is the second phase of the Escondido Village spine running south to north between Escondido Road to Olmsted Road. It will improve internal travel routes and connectivity with neighboring regions for planned graduate housing.

Medical School Connections  MSOB Pathway (42068)
This project defines a walkway for the pedestrians arriving on the east side of Welch Road from the Stock Farm parking structure and lot. Pedestrians will no longer be required to compete with vehicles in the parking lot aisles.

Resurfacing Projects (93025)
The following projects will dig out and replace failed areas of pavement and apply a new slurry-seal surface and new striping. The exception is Dudley Court, which will be fully reconstructed.

Lucas Center Expansion (2350)
Project adds additional underground space allowing the MRS group to add a new, more powerful magnet to their equipment inventory.

Building 2-500 Renovations (2388)
Project seismically strengthens this building while making improvements to 14,000 square feet of mixed-use space.
Duration: July 19, 2004 to Aug. 1, 2005
Bakewell Building Renovations (2417)
Project will remodel the building and provide seismic strengthening.
Duration: November 2004 to Sept. 1, 2005
CSLI/EPGY Building (2420)
Project adds an 8,270-square-foot annex for the Educational Program for Gifted Youth, a Media X initiative.

Maples Pavilion Renovation (2426)
Project will add 18,153 square feet above and below ground level and upgrade and seismically strengthen the arena.

Falk Building Remodel Phase IV (2428)
Project will reconfigure and add workstations and create a new equipment room and a dark room.

Falk Cardiovascular Center MRI Facility (2425)
Project reorganizes space in the basement to allow the installation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment.

Graduate Student Community Center (2472)
Project will build a 12,000-square-foot graduate student center.

Otolaryngology Facility (2484)
Project renovates a previously leased building for a new medical department.

Arrillaga Family Recreation Center (4854)
Project on the site of the old Encina Gym creates a new recreation center.

Knoll Seismic Renovation (6125)
Project will upgrade mechanical, electrical and telecommunications systems and bring structure into compliance with university seismic guidelines. Renovations will improve internal space utilization while preserving the building's historic features.
