Memorial service set for murdered alumnus Bloch

A memorial service for alumnus Federico Bloch will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at Memorial Church. Bloch, former chief executive of the Central American airline consortium Grupo Taca, was found shot to death on April 26 outside of San Salvador. He was 50.

Bloch, a native of El Salvador, earned bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial engineering at Stanford in 1975 and later earned an MBA at Harvard University.

Bloch was a 20th-century Renaissance man, an accomplished industrialist and a caring family man, wrote classmate Harry Chandler in an e-mail. "Yet the qualities that really distinguished him to those that knew him well were his personal traits: His smile was contagious, he exuded charm, he always looked out after everyone else's well-being."

A Federico Bloch Memorial Scholarship to benefit undergraduate students from Latin America has been established. Contributions can be sent to Stanford University, Attn: Gift Processing, 326 Galvez St., Stanford, CA 94305-6105 or by calling 725-4360. Make checks payable to Stanford University and note "Federico Bloch Memorial Scholarship Fund" on the memo line.
