Honors and Awards
JOHN I. BRAUMAN, the J. G. Jackson and C. J. Wood Professor of Chemistry, and GORDON H. BOWER, the Albert Ray Lang Professor of Psychology, have been elected to the American Philosophical Society. Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743 for the purpose of "promoting useful knowledge," the Philadelphia-based society has 765 elected members from the United States and 144 from other countries.
PATRICK SUPPES, the Lucie Stern Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, has received the 2003 Lakatos Award of 10,000 pounds (about $18,400) for his book Representation and Invariance of Scientific Structures (CSLI Publications, 2002). The award is given annually for a book published in English during the previous six years that makes an outstanding contribution to the philosophy of science. It is given in memory of Imre Lakatos, who was a professor of logic at the London School of Economics, and is administered by an international management committee organized from the school.
