Reuters, Newsweek and others. The death of former President Ronald Reagan, the dominant news story last week, brought to the fore an interesting medical sidelight. Former first lady Nancy Reagan has become a public advocate for stem cell research, which has been limited by the current Republican administration. ReaganÂ’s death has also given fresh impetus to an upcoming California initiative to fund stem cell research. Stem cell researcher Irving Weissman, MD, the Karel and Avice Beekhuis Professor of Cancer Biology, commented on this phenomenon in stories that appeared in Reuters, Newsweek and other outlets.
