We joined the vessel Gus D in Cabo San Lucas on April 7, after it had been at sea for 12 days. Cabo was an undeveloped area “ferocious with wildlife” when Steinbeck and Ricketts visited there in 1940, but Professor Bill Gilly finds that development has changed all of that. When the Gus D heads north and finally enters the Sea of Cortez, the natural wildness of the region returns, highlighted by a dramatic performance by a school of young rays.
