Red Barn Festival scheduled for Aug. 21

The 15th Annual Red Barn Festival, a daylong event featuring family-oriented activities, is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Stanford Equestrian Center. A separate evening program begins at 5:30 p.m.

"A Day on the Farm" is the title of this year's festival. It will include exhibitions of horse breeds Arabians, Morgans, Quarter Horses, Clydesdales, Percherons and miniature horses, among others and riding demonstrations of vaulting, polo, dressage and driving.

The festival also will feature a petting zoo, pony rides, an exhibition of antique carriages and a silent auction. The evening program includes a buffet barbecue dinner, Western dancing and a live auction of donated goods, services and vacations.

Bill Lane, retired publisher of Sunset Magazine, co-chairman of Lane Publishing Co. and former U.S. ambassador to Australia, will once again serve as honorary chairman emeritus of this year's festival.

"The Stanford Red Barn is a 'working' historic structure to remember the Palo Alto Stock Farm that helped develop the great Stanford University," Lane said in a statement. "Both gained worldwide reputations for innovative research and quality. This 15th Annual Red Barn Festival will be a reminder of that rich history and provide an ongoing demonstration of exciting equestrian events that are still an active part of 'Life on the Farm.'"

Tickets for the day program will be available at the gate. Discounts will be offered for Stanford faculty, staff and students with a valid Stanford identification. Admission is $10 for adults ($8 with Stanford ID) and $5 for children 6 and over ($3 for children of Stanford students and employees). Admission is free to children under 6. Gates open at 10:30 a.m.; performances start at 11 a.m. and continue until 4:00 p.m.
