Stephen J. Smith, PhD, professor of molecular and cellular physiology, received a McKnight Technological Innovations in Neuroscience Award, which provides $200,000 over two years to develop technology to advance neuroscience research. Smith’s project is “Methods for the Delineation of Brain Circuitry by Serial-Sectioning Scanning Electron Microscopy.” He will collaborate with the inventor of the “microscope of the 21st century,” Winfried Denk, PhD, of the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg. Their innovative scanning methods will provide the capacity to analyze complete brain circuits in minute detail.
