Cancer screening served up

Skin cancer screenings will be offered by the Department of Dermatology’s division of dermatologic surgery at this week’s Bank of the West Classic tennis tournament at Stanford’s Taube Tennis Center.

An information booth will also be set up at the tournament and fans will be treated to free samples of sunscreen and plenty of advice on skin care. The screenings, conducted by a leading dermatologist, are free of charge.

Non-melanoma skin cancer affects 1 in 5 Americans, so it’s important to slop on sunscreen to avoid the redness and burn of long-term exposure.

Experts recommend a sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 30 that contains one of the following agents: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and Parsol 1789 for added protection.
