Judy
Illes, PhD, senior research scholar in biomedical ethics, was
appointed to the social issues committee of the Society for
Neuroscience. Her three-year tenure begins in November at the
society’s 2003 annual meeting in New Orleans. The committee
plans the social issues roundtable for the following year’s
annual meeting. The role of the committee may be expanded to serve
as a review board for ethical concerns. Derrick James Rossi, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in pathology, was awarded a three-year Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation fellowship. Rossi’s sponsor is Irving Weissman, MD, the Karel H. and Avice N. Beekhuis Professor in Cancer Biology, and his topic is “The use of adult stem cells in cancer therapy.” The Damon Runyon awards provide financial support to outstanding young scientists who are conducting theoretical and experimental research relevant to the study of cancer and the search for its causes, mechanisms, therapies and prevention.
