Gerald R. Crabtree, MD, professor of pathology at the medical school; Carole Ho, MD, a neurologist and currently a posdoctoral fellow in biological sciences; and neurosurgery resident Stephen Ryu, MD, received awards for 2003 from the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation to further their work on spinal cord injury research. "Stanford University School of Medicine has established itself as a focal point of some of the most exciting and promising of [spinal cord] research," said Reeve, chairman of the board of the foundation. Crabtree, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, will focus on understanding the difficulties of adult nerve cell regeneration. Ho is investigating basic science mechanisms of sensory axon regeneration. Ryu, who has Stanford degrees in electrical engineering, is currently working to enhance the performance of cortically controlled prosthetic arm systems.
