cell researchers offer mini-course
Researchers at the medical center are playing a leading role in the new field of stem cell study that could someday treat or prevent cancer and other serious diseases. Now these researchers want to let the public in on whats going on. Those interested in learning more about stem cell research at Stanford can attend a mini-course on the subject Monday night. The two-hour course, "From Stem Cells to Breakthrough Therapies," starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni Center on the Stanford campus. Philip Pizzo, MD, dean of the School of Medicine, will begin the evening, followed by a talk by Irving Weissman, MD, director of Stanfords new Institute for Stem Cell/Cancer Biology and Medicine. After the welcoming talks, attendees will break out into smaller groups led by Stanford faculty who will discuss the relationship between stem cells and potential applications for treating cancer, diseases of the nervous system or diabetes. The course costs $25 per person. Call 724-5058 to reserve a spot.
