Everett named associate vice provost for residential and dining enterprises

BY BARBARA PALMER

Shirley Everett, currently executive director of university dining services, has been named associate vice provost for residential and dining enterprises, effective Oct. 15, Vice Provost Tim Warner has announced. Keith Guy, who had headed the dining and housing services for 15 years, retired from his position Aug. 31.

In the post, Everett will oversee the university's $100 million housing and dining services operation, including student undergraduate and graduate housing; student dining services; catering, café and concession services; summer conference services; and housing assignment services.

"Shirley brings a wealth of experience to the role. She's done a tremendous job of turning around the student dining program, and in the process of doing that has become attuned to issues all across residences and dining," Warner said.

A national search was conducted to fill the post, he said. "We saw some very strong candidates, but the committee felt that Shirley emerged as the right person for the job."

Everett graduated from Valparaiso University, in Valparaiso, Ind., with a bachelor's degree in home economics. She held management jobs in university and college food service at Bryn Mawr and the University of Pennsylvania before becoming assistant director of residence hall dining at the University of California-Berkeley in 1988.

Everett came to Stanford in 1991 as associate director of dining services, where she first managed the operation of 10 residence hall dining locations. As associate director, Everett was responsible for numerous innovations, including introducing late-night pizza and campus cafés, creating new positions, including executive chef and a training and education manager and assuming responsibility for athletic concessions, athletic training tables, campus-wide vending and maintaining 37 student-managed kitchens.

At the same time, Shirley has accomplished the "herculean task" of improving food quality, while not increasing prices for meal plans, Warner said.

As executive director of dining, Everett administers the University Dining Services budget and directs a staff of 180 full-time employees who provide meals for 3,170 students and 14,000 summer conference guests. Everett also oversaw the construction of Manzanita Dining Commons, and renovated six residential dining facilities and 20 student-managed residential row house kitchens.

Everett said her new position "affords me an even greater opportunity to contribute to the overall success of Residential and Dining Enterprises. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to work at a premier institution with the brightest and most talented students and colleagues and awesome staff members one could ask for."

Everett has been honored by the Culinary Institute of America for co-developing formal culinary training programs for university food service workers and received the National Association of College and University Food Service President's Award in 1998 and 2001. In 1997 she was awarded the International Food Service Manufacturers Association "Silver Plate" award for Outstanding Leadership in College and University Food Service. In 1995, she received a Special Recognition for Support of the English as a Second Language Program award for tutoring dining staff.

Everett earned a master's of business administration degree from St. Mary's College in Moraga in 1999.
