Committee named to search for Montoya's replacement

A committee has been formed to search for a successor to James Montoya, the outgoing vice provost for student affairs, Jeff Wachtel, special assistant to the president and provost, has announced.

The committee, named by Provost John Etchemendy and chaired by John Bravman, vice provost for undergraduate education, will meet for the first time this week to begin a national search for Montoya's replacement. "The idea is to have an appointment as soon as possible and certainly by the fall term," said Wachtel, who added that an interim vice provost for student affairs will be named if needed.

Committee members are Bravman; Alan Acosta, director of university communications; Cheri Ross, associate director of the Introduction to Humanities program; Karen Cook, the Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor of Sociology; John Perry, the Henry Waldgrave Stuart Professor of Philosophy; Denis Phillips, professor of education; LaDoris Cordell, vice provost and special counselor to the president for campus relations; Jennifer Westerlind, associate university counsel; Scotty McLennan, dean for religious life; Tim Warner, vice provost for budget and auxiliaries management; and students Charlene Ng, a junior majoring in biology and history, and Wendelin Wright, a doctoral candidate in materials science and engineering.

Montoya, who has served as vice provost for student affairs since 1997, is departing Stanford June 30 to become vice president of the College Board. Montoya became dean of undergraduate admission in 1991 and served as dean of admission and financial aid from 1994 to 1997. SR
