Cardinal Chronicle THE STAFF AT THE CANTOR ARTS CENTER KNEW they had a winner with the exhibit "Corot to Picasso: European Masterworks from the Smith College Museum of Art," featuring works by artists including Gaugin, Monet, Kadinsky and Picasso. Still, they've been awed by the size of the crowds its attracted, said spokesperson ANNA KOSTER. Nearly 6,000 people visited the museum the week of July 9 when the exhibit opened. In two weeks time, good reviews and word-of-mouth had bumped that figure up to 8,400 people in a week, Koster said. So far, exhibit attendance has broken all records except one: the record 16,616 people who visited the museum the week it reopened in 1999 after a 10-year closure for earthquake-related repairs and expansion. "I don't see how we could ever beat that," Koster said. "Give away gold bars, maybe." TURNS OUT THE WINNER OF A $2,500 GIFT certificate in the
