Nominations for 10th
president to close Jan. 14
The Presidential Search
Committee has set Jan. 14 as the deadline for submitting
names of candidates to succeed President Gerhard Casper.
The committee, chaired by
Trustee James R. Ukropina and co-chaired by philosophy
Professor John Etchemendy, is scheduled to submit its top
nominees to the Board of Trustees for a decision by the
end of the academic year.
The committee has been
actively soliciting nominations and advice, according to
Donna Lawrence, executive vice chair for the group. A
letter has been sent to all alumni, and advertisements
have run in the national and international press.

Information:
Members of the search
committee have met informally with representatives of the
Faculty Senate, and Etchemendy has sent a mailing to all
faculty members seeking nominees. Committee members also
have met with various campus officials, Lawrence said.
This month, public
meetings will be scheduled to hear from students, staff
and the campus community, she said. Committee members
also will continue to meet with groups of faculty,
alumni, students, staff and academic leaders across the
country.
According to the letter
sent to alumni, the committee hopes "to ensure an
inclusive and responsive search that will consider the
very best and most diverse set of nominees from both our
campus and elsewhere."
They seek nominees who
"are distinguished leaders with experience at large,
complex academic institutions, and who have strong
records of accomplishment . . . nominees who are capable
of preserving and enhancing Stanford's unique strengths
and furthering its commitment to excellence, innovation,
and diversity."
Nominations should be sent
to the search committee, care of Donna Lawrence,

also can be sent by e-mail to search@ohpca.com or by fax to (650) 723-7200. SR
