Scientists, archaeologists and historians unravel the mystery of Egypt's sunken cities

Last summer, French marine archaeologist Franck Goddio announced the discovery of two ancient Egyptian cities below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea.

The once great metropolises of Menouthis and Herakleion, along with part of nearby Alexandria, vanished into the murky depths of the Mediterranean more than 1,500 years ago.

What caused their sudden disappearance -- earthquakes, tsuanamis, floods?

The Discovery Channel USA examines the mystery in a new documentary called "Ancient Earthquakes, Sunken Cities." The film, which features Amos Nur, professor of geophysics, premieres on Jan. 29, 2001, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).
