Stanford offers unique summer study abroad programs -- a Chinese language course beginning at Stanford and ending with five weeks at Peking University, a creative writing course in the Mediterranean and Alpine Archaelogy in the Swiss and Italian Alps.

Tuesday, Dec. 7:

When he was asked five years ago what kind of football team Stanford would field under his direction, the newly appointed coach Tyrone Willingham responded: "One that wins games." The no-nonsense Willingham, who will take the Cardinal to the Rose Bowl in January, apparently had it right.

Monday, Dec. 6:

Ernie Nevers, a Stanford All-America fullback of the 1920s, and coaching legend Glenn S. "Pop" Warner are in the National Football Hall of Fame.

Friday, Dec. 3:

Ernie Nevers, a Stanford All-America fullback of the 1920s, and coaching legend Glenn S. "Pop" Warner are both in the National Football Hall of Fame.

Memorial Church is one of the few places in the nation to be graced with three pipe organs. Robert Huw Morgan, Stanford's interim organist, will give a free holiday recital there Sunday at 2 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 2:

Those who don't feel ready for the first presidential election of the new century can take a Continuing Studies prep course from Political Science Professor Emeritus Richard Brody on Wednesday evenings, beginning Jan. 5. Brody has written books on presidential politics and overseen national election studies.

Wednesday, Dec. 1:

Stanford Lively Arts, now celebrating its 30th anniversary, is reflecting on its past. Once, in a panic to mount a set calling for an attic full of junk, it sought the help of the late Herb Caen, who put the request in his newspaper column. Bay Area readers lent plenty of items.
