Anesthesia leadership change

DR. FRANK SARNQUIST WAS NAMED acting chair of the Department of Anesthesia in mid-June after Dr. Donald Stanski stepped down from the chairmanship, which he had held for five years.

Stanski, whose research interests are in pharmacokinetics and dynamics of anesthetic drugs, will continue his research, teaching and clinical practice as a professor in the department.

Sarnquist, who has served on the faculty since 1976, was appointed to full professor in 1992. An expert on high-altitude physiology, he participated as a climber/physician in a 1981 American Medical Research Expedition to Mt. Everest. His other research interests include the medical effects of heart bypass surgery and risk management in anesthesia. Sarnquist earned his medical degree in 1969 at UCSF and later did a residency there.
